1) Seminar Discussion Topic: Read the first four lines (the proem) of the Metamorphoses in Latin and English translation, along with the proem of the Iliad, Odyssey, Argonautica and Aetia (handouts). BE ABLE TO COMPARE all at the beginning of class. I will call on individuals to begin the discussion.

2) For Tuesday Latin rabbits prepare to read Ovid, Metamorphoses 1.5-40 in translation and others keep up in translation. For Friday finish down to line 75 of Book One. SEE EMAIL FOR TEXT and commentary. Non-Latin rabbits should read this in translation from your book.

1) Short Presentations on Significant Literary Antecedents for Ovid

a) Hesiod’s (archaic Greek Author),Theogony (Josselyn). Use article from OCD handed out in class and skim your mythology textbook chapters 3. You do not have to master all this matter, just the salient points for a 5-10 minute informal presentation.

b) Hesiod’s (archaic Greek Author), Works and Days (Mirna). Use article from OCD on Hesiod handed out in class and skim your mythology textbook chapters 4. You do not have to master all this matter, just the salient points for a 5-10 minute informal presentation.

c) Callimachus (Hellenistic/Alexandrian) Aetia, Hymns to Gods, etc (Sir Ian). Read and summarize OCD article handed out in class and have a look at this website. 5-10 minute informal presentation.

2) Latin Reading Rabbits: Finish all of Amores 1.15 and read the first 20 lines of the Ars Amatoria, Book 1 (handed out in class). I need to send a translation of the Ars Amatoria to Non-Latin bunnies to read translation. Email if you need documents.

1) Presentation on Homeric heroic myth:

a) Hector and Andromache in Homer’s Iliad (Josselyn)

b) Briseis and her role in the Iliad (Sir Ian)

c) Ares (Mars) and Aphrodite (Venus) in Demodocus’ song in book 8 of Homer’s Odyssey (Mirna)

2) Prepare to read all of Ovid, Amores 1.9 and half of 1.15. Finish all of 1.15 for Thursday’s Class. Non-Latin bunnies read these poems in translation. See email if you need anything or missed it in class.

3) Always review notes from class and readings.

4) Alexandrian/Hellenistic writers and their influence on Ovid. Aratus, Callimachus and Apollonius Rhodius.
